In Gotham City, a gang of criminals robs a Mafia-owned bank, only to have each member betray the other, but the Joker emerges as the mastermind and flees with the money, leading Batman, Harvey Dent, and Jim Gordon to team up to eradicate organized crime and protect the city, while Bruce Wayne supports Dents role as the citys guardian and tries to retire from crime-fighting to be with Rachel Dawes, though the Joker offers to kill Batman for the Mafia crime bosses, prompting Batman to retrieve their accountant, Lau, from Hong Kong, and Dent to capture the crime families, but the Joker continues to target prominent figures and demands that Batman reveal his true identity, resulting in Dent claiming he is Batman and a deadly confrontation with the Joker that leaves Rachel dead, Dent disfigured, the Joker on the loose causing havoc, Batman taking the blame for Dents actions and becoming a fugitive, and the police searching for him. Pictures acquired the distribution rights for the motion picture. The Dark Knight was released on 18th July 2008 and takes a screen time of 152 minutes. and it received positive reviews from critics when it was released. The Dark Knight was made on a budget of $185 million and at the box office it grossed only $0 million. The screenplay for the movie was written by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan.
